Frequency
JST is published monthly: twelve issues a year, numbered 1 to 12 from January to December, and one volume per calendar year (Vol. 11 is 2026). Each issue is published by the last day of its month. The date shown on an issue, and on every article in it, is the date on which it went online; issues are never given an earlier date than the day they were released. Articles are published only as part of an issue; there is no online-first or continuous publication. A special issue on a single theme may be published in addition to the twelve regular issues, numbered separately within the volume; the last were the two special issues of 2022.
What an issue contains
Every issue contains at least one peer-reviewed article. Each article carries its own DOI and its page range within the issue. The table of contents of every issue, from Vol. 1 No. 1 (2016) onward, is on the Archives page, and the content is preserved in Portico.
From submission to publication
The first editorial decision on a manuscript is normally sent within six to eight weeks of submission (see the Peer Review Process). An accepted article is copyedited and typeset, the corresponding author approves the proof, and the article is published in the next issue to close after the proof is approved. The journal does not hold an accepted article back to fill a later issue.
Delays
If an issue cannot be published by the end of its month, it is published as soon as it is ready, with its real publication date, and the delay is recorded on this page. Vol. 11 No. 7 (July 2026) was published on 15 September 2026. Vol. 11 No. 8 (August 2026) is delayed; it and Vol. 11 No. 9 (September 2026) will be published by 30 September 2026.

Publication history
Vol. 1 (2016): one issue. Vols. 2–6 (2017–2021): six issues a year, with a special issue in 2017, 2020 and 2021. Vol. 7 (2022) onward: twelve issues a year, with two special issues in 2022. The full record is on the Archives page.
