Editorial Board Policy
Who is on the board, and for how long. Members of the editorial board are invited by the Editor-in-Chief, with the agreement of the publisher, on the basis of an active research record in the journal's subject areas: a current institutional affiliation, recent peer-reviewed publications and experience of peer review. The journal seeks a board spread across institutions and countries. Membership begins with the member's written acceptance and runs for a term of three years, renewable by agreement; a member may step down at any time. The board is reviewed each year, and a member who has not handled or reviewed a manuscript in the previous twelve months is asked whether they wish to continue. Each member is listed with name, role, department, institution, city, country and ORCID iD; no one is listed without their consent, and nobody pays, or is paid, to sit on the board. Board membership is a working role, not an honorary title.
What members do, and the rules they work under. Board members advise the Editor-in-Chief on the journal's scope and policies; act as handling editors for manuscripts in their field — assessing them at submission, choosing reviewers and recommending a decision; review manuscripts themselves when asked; suggest reviewers and topics for special issues; and promote the journal in their communities. They serve without payment. They declare conflicts of interest and do not handle or review a manuscript from their own institution, from a recent co-author, collaborator or student, or in which they have any personal or financial interest; such a manuscript goes to another editor. A board member who submits to JST is treated as any other author: the manuscript is handled by an editor with no connection to them, the member has no access to its review, and the final decision rests with the Editor-in-Chief, as it does for every manuscript. Members keep everything about a manuscript confidential and act under the journal's Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement and Reviewer Guidelines; a member who breaches them is removed from the board.
