Digital Preservation
Journal of Science and Technology (JST) is committed to the long-term preservation and accessibility of its published content, ensuring that articles remain available to readers and researchers even in the event the journal ceases publication or becomes otherwise unavailable from its original source.
Preservation Services
JST's content is digitally preserved through the following independent archiving initiatives:
- Portico — A trusted, not-for-profit digital preservation service operated by ITHAKA (also known for JSTOR), preserving e-journals, e-books, and other electronic scholarly content for long-term accessibility. Portico is used by over 1,000 publishers and 1,000 libraries worldwide.
- PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN) — A free, not-for-profit dark archive developed specifically for journals using Open Journal Systems (OJS). PKP PN preserves content using the LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) distributed preservation model, ensuring that JST's content remains accessible independent of the journal's hosting or publisher status.
How This Protects Readers and Authors
Both Portico and PKP PN operate as "dark archives" — meaning preserved content is held securely and is not publicly accessible under normal circumstances, but becomes available in the event of a "trigger event" such as the journal ceasing publication, the publisher discontinuing operations, or content becoming otherwise unavailable from JST's own website. This ensures that:
- Published articles remain part of the permanent scholarly record, regardless of the journal's future operational status.
- Citations to JST articles remain valid and traceable over the long term.
- Readers, libraries, and institutions can rely on continued access to JST's published research.
Verification
JST's preservation status with these services can be independently verified through Portico's publisher listings and the PKP PN network directory.
